What makes Sun Temples so special?

Sun Temples are located in different parts of India, most prominent among them are the Sun Temple at Modhera, Gujarat located on the Western Coast of India & Konarak Sun Temple alongside the Bay of Bengal in East India. Built at the height of temple architecture in India during the 11th century by Solanki rulers, this temple is divided into three parts with the sacred water tank replete with geometric steps & tiny shrines completing the fourth part. The reflection of the temple on the still waters makes for a compelling sight during & a little after sunrise.

The other three parts comprise the main temple - `Garbhamandapa', `Gudamandapa' (simple hall) & the Assembly Hall known as the `Sabha Mandapa.' All three parts are intricately carved with motifs & themes ranging from the circle of life - including the act of giving birth in the squat position, erotic sculptures & scenes from daily life. The highlight also includes 52 magnificently carved pillars around the octagonal shaped Assembly Hall. These 52 pillars correspond to 52 weeks of the year. What makes the Sun Temple so special is the first rays of the rising Sun fall on main idol of Garbhagriha on days of equinoxes - 21st March & 21st September.

The main shrine is located on top of an inverted lotus which is also associated with the Sun. The Modhera Sun Temple is not just an architectural beauty but also an astronomical marvel & a fine example of converting complicated astronomy into a simple manner by using these temples as a medium.
