Only Place where Farming is below Sea Level
Replete with pleasant surprises, Kerala has one more unique distinction. Kuttanad in Alleppey District is also called the `Rice Bowl of Kerala' because of wealth of paddy crops, that too at the heart of its famed backwaters. Kuttanad is a vast area of reclaimed land separated by dikes from water that is actually a few feet higher. The scenic countryside of Kuttanand with its shimmering waterways has a rich field of banana, cassava & yam. This is perhaps the only region in the world where farming is done 1.5 to 2 meters below sea level. The Q,S T & R Block are wonders of indigenous agricultural engineering often reminding visitors of renowned dykes of Holland. The process of reclaiming this land started more than a hundred years ago. With 850 acres under cultivation, R Block is the largest reclaimed area. A leisurely cruise along the canals that surround these fields is a brilliant experience.
