Highest Lake in the Trans Himalaya -Tso Morari
Fed by abundant winter snowfall & numerous mountain streams flowing from icy peaks, Tso Morari lake measuring over 12,000 hectares & situated at 4500 meters above sea level is the highest endorheic lake in the Trans-Himalayan region. Surrounded by the Changthang plateau which is an extension of the western Tibetan region, this area is home to the nomadic Changpa people, the Tibetan Wild Ass, a breeding ground for some of India's most renowned avian species, including Black Necked Crane, Bar Headed Geese, Rudy Shelduck to name but a few. By late April, migratory birds descend from as far as Central Asia making it a breeding ground right through the summer. This brackish lake leaves huge salt deposits along its fringes, is mineral rich making it teem with wildlife during the warm summer months. One of the most brilliant regions in terms of scenic beauty, as well, Tso Morari has been spared the influx of mass tourism mainly because it takes a few hours to enter from Leh, thereby making day visits next to impossible! Thankfully Tso Morari still retains its original beauty to this day.
