Get to Know Kashmir
Enchanting Kashmir :- Hector Dsouza
Jehangir's comparison of Kashmir to `Paradise' has rarely
proved visitors wrong, many vouch for it. What makes this Himalayan state
unique from other Indian states? The reasons are not hard to comprehend,
considering the Kashmir Valley and Jammu lie between some of highest mountains
in the world. Kashmir is located between the Pir Panjal Range and the
Himalayas. Life and tourism revolve around lakes, rivers, gardens be it the
busy Dal Lake or the serene Nagin and Wular lakes. Shikara rides, houseboats
originated on the banks of the Dal, Nagin Lake; these were later replicated in
other parts, none can match the ethereal beauty as well as atmosphere of the surroundings in Kashmir.
Entering the Kashmir Valley at Sonmarg - a land flowing with
orchards, mountains opens new windows, new vistas. The journey to Amarnath for
viewing the famous Shiva Lingam in a low cut cave during the summer months
begin here. Thousands converge in the month of June for an arduous journey
culminating in a long trek to the shrine.
Less than 100 kilometers west lies the capital of city,
Srinagar founded in the 6th century AD by Raja Pravaresan. Divided
into two parts by the river Jhelum, life centres around the two lakes. Shikara
rides are plentiful, while houseboats lie anchored alongside banks. Houseboats
cater to all categories of tourists with an all inclusive plan. Basking on the
viewing deck, watching daily life unfold as boatmen trade wares on passing
Shikaras, scaning the horizon for mountain peaks, listening to distant sounds
of the wandering city, are simply taking a nap are wholesome activities that
holiday makers could indulge in. The all inclusive plan ensures a hot &
delicious cuisine is just a wooden step away.
Sightseeing options range from visiting Shankaracharya Temple
perched on top of a hill, built by Emperor Ashoka in 2nd Century BC
to visiting Hazratbal Mosque believed to contain a strand of the hair of
Prophet Mohammed. Gardens though rule the roost on with Shalimar Bagh built by
Emperor Jehangir and consisting of symmetrical terraces connected by a water
channel. Nishat Bagh is larger, while Chasme Shahi is a smaller garden with its
own charm and splendor. There is no denying of the undying love some Mughal
Emperors like Jehangir and Shah Jehan had for Kashmir. Their existence to this
day is in itself a proud testimony.
Gulmarg & Pahalgam are two picturesque hill stations a
couple of hours drive away from Srinagar.
