It's said even Emperor Akbar sat among ordinary & ate the food served at the famous 'langar' (kitchen), in the Golden Temple at Amritsar. The Golden Temple is to the Sikh community as the Vatican is to the Catholics. Located in Amritsar in the state of Punjab, the temple contains the holy book - Granth Sahib written by Guru Nanak. Thousand of devotees visit the temple each day, more than 75,000 avail of the services of the free kitchen serving a vegetarian meal 24/7. An astounding 100 quintals of Wheat Flour, 5000 liters of milk, 12 quintal rice, 25 quintals cereals & vegetables, 10 quintals of sugar are used each day for preparation of meals by more than 100 employees & an equal number of devotees. Families of group of families take turns to prepare the `langar'. No catering services are allowed, its purely of the work of volunteers. All in all a daunting task performed to perfection in the service of God. By & large the Sikh community comprising less than two percent of India's population is under an obligation to contribute 10% of his earnings to charity & use his hands for service of the poor & needy. Hence the voluntary work done in the langar (kitchen) is considered noteworthy.
