168 year Anglican Church refuses to leak!

Various faults may be found with the British rule of India ranging from subjugation to intolerance of peaceful protests. Yet mention must be made they built imposing structures be it churches, hospitals, railway stations & railway lines that withstood various onslaughts over a period of time. One such structure is the St Pauls Cathedral I was fortunate to visit a couple of days ago at Kolkatta. Built between 1839 to 1847, the Anglican Cathedral built in Gothic style is one of the most important churches in East India. Lying east of Victoria Memorial, the steeple was destroyed during an earthquake in 1897 & was redesigned & rebuilt. Brilliantly designed & housing memorials as well as stained glass windows, it is reputed to have finest stain glass window designed in India at its western end by Edward Burne Jones in the year 1880.

Listening to the Sunday service despite the rain and not a drop touching the floor from its impressive white washed ceiling roof serves a reminder that though it was done for personal gain, the Brits did leave behind iconic structures, in use even to this day. Be it the Victoria Memorial in Kolkatta, Gateway of India, Mumbai or the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Central Mumbai.
